Nigeria Polls: U.K, Dutch Trade Congresses back cancellation
- [ 14/06/2007

TUC, with its 6.4 million members and 63 affiliate unions, yesterday
voiced its solidarity with its Nigerian counterpart via a statement by
the General Secretary, Mr Brendan Barber, which said the monitored
reports of events of the last month's election in Nigeria "left no
option than for the elections to be annulled.
"Reports of the events of last month convince us that there is no option, but for the
elections to be annulled, and for the President of the Senate to assume
leadership for a three-month period when the current President of the
Republic leaves office at the end of May, to allow free and fair
elections to take place," he said.
The Netherlands trade union in its position statement, endorsed by the
President, Mr Agnes Jongerius, said it has taken note of the
problematic preparations before the elections, interference of the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), violence,
intimidation and unfair practices that took place during the voting exercise.
"We also know that many civil society organisations in Nigeria, including
the NLC, and many observers, including the official EU observers have
expressed their concerns. We, therefore, make a strong appeal for
cancellation of the results," it said.
